Allahabad is now officially renamed as ‘Prayagraj’ on Tuesday i.e. 16 October 2018.
The Cabinet of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath cleared a proposal today to rename the Uttar Pradesh's historic city Allahabad.
CM proposed to rename before Kumbh Mela to be held in Prayag City this time.
“Allahabad will be called Prayagraj from today,” state minister Siddharth Nath Singh said in Lucknow after the Cabinet meeting.
Allahabad was also known as Triveni Sangam, the confluence of 3 rivers i.e. the Ganges, Yamuna and "invisible" Saraswati rivers, which is considered holy by Hindus.

Prayag means (Sanskrit for "place of sacrifice"), as it is believed to be the spot where Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating the world.Allahabad was also known as Triveni Sangam, the confluence of 3 rivers i.e. the Ganges, Yamuna and "invisible" Saraswati rivers, which is considered holy by Hindus.
